project 3

Cover page
This is a note that I took while the guest artist was giving a small talk at shaowen's class.
As he said, for art gallery in such location like newtown, it is important that the gallery captures public's attention.
This became my main idea and for this project I tried to design an art gallery which blends with the surrounding environment, but at the same time stands out among the others.

Surrounding buildings
While I was at newtown wondering around the king st., it was very interesting to see how the top of the buildings has a very interesting shape.

poche

geometry

Geometry is what I spend most of my time on. I tried to find the intersection of the lines and/or the shapes house created with its basic elements, such as wall, doorway and etc.

circulation

On the plane, the major path way within the house was drawn to show the circulation of the house. The attempt to illustrate the circulation of the house in section view was not a huge success as it did not have strong pattern as the plan circulation.

enclosure

After the structure diagram was finished, remove of internal wall and drew in windows and doors as a line to visualise the enclosure.

structure

Structure was very straight forward and easy to indicate. All the load bearing walls were drawn as a structure diagram.

Vanna Venturi's House - without roof

Completed Model - Vanna Venturi's house

Anna Venturi’s house which is also well known as “Mother’s house”, has very compact and unique interior structure. Once me and my group mate, Kristi, got the house, we thought it is not going to be too much hassle as it had relatively simple exterior. As we progress on the research and investigate the interior of the house, I panicked. Different to simple exterior, interior is so compact and had a number of very confusing yet interesting elements: such as a stair case which leads to, literally, nowhere and curved roof on top of dining area. Roof of the finished model does not sit on the wall properly, but besides that, I am very happy with the result.
